      Interesting Avenidas Novas History Tidbits....

      Presenter: Curt Nelson

What is the history of the neighbourhood where I live, Saldahna and Avenidas Novas? What is that building that looks like a castle in the Gulbenkian park? Who was Luis Bivar? Did you know that Av Duque de Ávila was originally the Lisbon “Ring Road”? What are those plaques on beautiful buildings for the "Prémio Valmor", and are they related somehow to the street Av Viscount de Valmor or the Valmor Palace on Av Republica? Who was São Sebastião, why is he always depicted full of arrows, and why is his church called “...da Pedreira”, “of the quarry”. What quarry?

      Bio for Curt Nelson

Curt Nelson and his wife, IWP member Annette Seppanen, came to Lisbon part-time in 2018 after careers in San Diego & Austin Texas.  Originally Minnesotans, they graduated from the University of Minnesota and did graduate degrees at the University of Arizona in Tucson. After a decade at Hewlett-Packard, Curt became an entrepreneur in the software, real estate, and healthy food spaces. Now he tries to stay upright on the calcadas, hangs out with the Lisbon Area Gentlemen’s Society (LAGS), and fishes for walleye during their summers on a lake in Northern Minnesota

Visit to the National Tile Museum

      Tuesday, April 15th

      10:30 - 12:30

The National Tile Museum (Museu Nacional do Azulejo) in Lisbon is one of Portugal’s most unique museums, dedicated to the art of decorative tiles, or azulejos. It is housed in the former Convent of Madre de Deus, a stunning 16th-century building with one of the most representative churches of Portuguese Baroque. The museum showcases centuries of tile-making history, starting from Islamic and moorish beginnings. We will discover the changes in tile making to accomodate Portuguese and European tastes over the centuries up to modern designs. One of its highlights is a massive 18th-century tile panel depicting Lisbon before the 1755 earthquake. The museum’s collection offers a fascinating insight into Portugal’s cultural and artistic heritage, making it a must-visit for history and design enthusiasts.

Wills and Succession Planning in Portugal

A year ago, Topical Talks featured a talk on Wills and Estate Planning.  As this subject is extremely important, we want to offer it again, especially for those of you who have joined us in the last year and may not know about the 'ins and outs' of Portuguese law.  When it comes to dealing with estates and wills, having the right documentation in place is critical. We have invited IWP's Lisbon lawyers, Teresa Patricio and Vicky Rodrigues, to join us this month to offer a clear explanation of 'how things work' for expats here in Portugal.

Visit to the National Palace Sintra

      Wednesday, April 23rd

      10:30 - 12:30

The National Palace of Sintra  is a striking blend of Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline architecture. It’s construction began in the 15th century.

Recognizable by its iconic twin chimneys, the palace served as a royal residence for centuries, almost up to the end of the monarchy, in 1910.

Inside, visitors can admire beautifully decorated rooms with intricate tilework, elaborate wooden ceilings, and stunning azulejo panels. Highlights include the Swan Room, the Magpie Room, and the impressive Coat of Arms Room. As the best-preserved medieval royal palace in Portugal, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the country’s history and aristocratic life.

MEDITATION ON ENERGETIC CHANNELS IN CASCAIS

      Friday, April 25th

      11:00 - 12:00

Experience Healing and Transformation through Meditation on Energetic Channels

Join Tanya Shynkarenko in a unique meditation session focused on Classical Energetic Channels, often referred to as acupuncture ‘meridians.’ These channels, traditionally used in acupuncture, were once philosophical concepts used by ancient sages for mental and spiritual self-improvement.

In this session, you'll meditate on the Yin Wei Mai channel, designed to help you address and transform life challenges related to Nine Palaces (Health, Wealth, Relationships, Creativity, Career, Wisdom, and more). Guided by experienced acupuncturist, this session will enhance your resilience and inner freedom.

AFTERNOON TEA AT CONVENT SQUARE HOTEL LISBON

      Friday, April 25th

      16:00 - 18:00

A luxury hotel in a 13th century convent is our Afternoon Tea setting for April. Join us at Convent Square Lisbon, Vignette Collection, a member of IHG Hotels & Resorts. Cobblestone streets lead to a beautifully restored open-air cloister with vast skies and illuminated fire pits at Convent Square Lisbon, where the allure of old-world charm meets modern luxury. The hotel is nestled in Lisbon’s Baixa neighbourhood, near Rossio Square. As an added treat, a hotel hostess will give a brief talk about the history of the hotel and its connection to the city of Lisbon at the start of Afternoon Tea.

Join us for Afternoon Tea at Convent Square Lisbon’s Capitulo Restaurant. Chat with fellow members while you enjoy a selection of mini sandwiches, crepe, scones, pastries, and tea/tea infusions (hot and cold options).

Venue:  Rua Dom Antão de Almada 4, Lisbon

      Price: €26
