          History Lovers Talk

          Friday 8th May

          10:00 - 11:30

The days after the April Revolution .......

After April 25, Portugal was swept into a period of intense change and uncertainty known as the PREC. People took to the streets to claim their rights, while agrarian reform reshaped the countryside.

Despite tensions, this turbulent time led to the 1976 Constitution and the foundations of today’s democracy, alongside a powerful return of long-suppressed freedoms.

It’s this journey—from revolution to stability—that we’ll explore in our next History Lovers Talk.

Meeting Point : St Paul´s Anglican Church, Av. Bombeiros Voluntários, Estoril

          Friday 15th May

          10:30- 11:30

Guided architectural tour of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Belém district

The architectural visit to MAAT reveals a fascinating dialogue between industrial heritage and contemporary innovation. The former Tejo Power Station, with its iron and brick structures typical of the early 20th century, harmonizes with the modern gallery designed by British architect Amanda Levete, whose sinuous form appears to emerge from the river and blend into the city.

          History Lovers Talk - Lisbon

          Tuesday 19th May

          19:00 - 21:00

          The Carnation Revolution.....

Join us for an inspiring History Lovers Talk on the Carnation Revolution, a turning point in our history. We will revisit the long shadows of Salazar’s dictatorship, the oppression of the political police (PIDE), and the heavy toll of the Colonial War that sparked the fire of rebellion.
We will uncover the bravery behind the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), from their clandestine meetings to the strategic military maneuvers that took the streets of Lisbon on April 25 of 1974. It is a story of secret codes, courage, and the peaceful overthrow of a regime that changed Portugal forever.

“This is the dawn I waited for... The initial day whole and clean...Where we emerge from night and silence... To inhabit the substance of time” Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen

MEETING POINT:  Good Company Bookstore is located near Campo Pequeno metro station (yellow line) or a few blocks walk from Saldanha station (yellow and red lines) at Av. Visconde de Valmor 2, 1000-291 Lisbon.

Guided Tour - Bairro Alto Lisbon

          Wednesday 20th May

          10:30 - 13:00

In 1513, Lisbon’s first planned neighbourhood—Bairro Alto—came into being. Its streets are still lined with palaces, convents, and houses that reveal the story of this open-air quarter, shaped by the expulsion of Lisbon’s Jewish community and the rapid growth of the city during the age of Portuguese maritime expansion.

More than 500 years later, we’ll walk these historic streets together, uncovering who designed, built, and brought them to life over the centuries.

Alcochete: A historic gem on the south bank of the Tagus

          Wednesday, May 26th

          10:30 - 13:30

Our journey through the “Margem Sul” continues with a visit to Alcochete, a charming former fishing village nestled on the southern bank of the Tagus River. Birthplace of King Manuel I, Alcochete was founded by the Moors in the 8th century and later became a significant royal retreat during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Today, it remains a town rich in cultural heritage, offering picturesque streets, traditional architecture, and stunning riverside views. For those looking to extend their visit, the Samouco Salt Flats and the Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve—home to diverse birdlife and beautiful landscapes—are just a 30-minute walk away, making for a perfect nature-filled day trip.

Discover the wines from right on our doorstep........

The Lisbon wine region is often overlooked. Yet it offers some of the most characterful and surprising wines in Portugal. In this tasting, we will discover 6 typical wines from the Lisbon region, each with its own character and style. Some of these wines come from regions that are literally right on our doorstep.

Shaped by the Atlantic Ocean, these wines show freshness, elegance and a strong sense of terroir.

Expect crisp, mineral driven whites with lively acidity. Perfect for lovers of fresh and gastronomic styles. We also explore how some international grape varieties, such as Syrah, get to great performance in this climate, giving wines with structure, balance and depth.

What to expect from our wine expert Petra Bakker:-

          • A guided wine tasting of 6 wines from the Lisbon region
          • Fresh, mineral driven Atlantic whites
