A different kind of treat awaits our Tea lovers this month. Afternoon Tea will be served at the Convento dos Cardaes, a 17th century convent and church in Lisbon that survived the 1755 earthquake. Built between 1677 and 1703, the convent preserves the baroque and rococo interior, with walls lined with Portuguese and Dutch tile panels.
The Convento dos Cardaes offers Afternoon Tea on weekends from mid-November to mid-December each year. Proceeds this year will go to the restoration of the Novices’ Cloister.
Chat with fellow members while you enjoy a scone, cakes, and tea. Interested parties may also attend a free one-hour concert at the church at 4:30 pm. The concert features the adufe musical instrument, a traditional square tambourine-like drum of Moorish origin, which is used in Portugal and Spain. You may also browse the convent shop, which sells Christmas goodies, like jams and cookies, among other things.
For those who are interested in a tour of the convent and church before Afternoon Tea, please let Tess Robeson know at mtrobeson@yahoo.com. If there’s enough interest, Tess can arrange for an English tour at 2:30 pm. The tour, which lasts about 45 minutes, costs 5€, payable directly to the Convento dos Cardaes.
Venue: : Convento dos Cardaes, Rua de O Seculo, 123, Lisboa
