Literature Talk Portuguese Writers

Thursday 19th March

14:30 - 16:00

Melancholy, Irony, and the Edge of Europe

What happens to literature when a country lives at the very edge of Europe, facing the ocean? Portugal knew empire — and decline. Monarchy, republic, dictatorship — and in 1974, a peaceful revolution.

Glory. Silence. Censorship. Nostalgia. Reinvention. Such history leaves its mark.

What unites four major Portuguese writers translated into English:Fernando Pessoa, Eça de Queiroz, José Saramago, António Lobo Antunes?

Different centuries. Different styles. Different politics. And yet — they share something essential: They write from the margins. They distrust certainty. They mix irony with melancholy.

And above all, they ask the same question: Who are we?
