We are excited to have Liliya Varon´s presentation of An Art Talk, featuring the painting ¨The Graham Children¨ by William Hogarth. Below is a brief introduction to both Liliya and the topic.
With an academic background in English Literature and after years of
lecturing, Liliya ventured into entrepreneurship, co-founded a start-up, and served as its Executive VP, until its acquisition by a public U.S. company.
However, her true passion led her back to the world of Art History. Liliya's particular joy is making classical paintings “readable” for the modern viewer. She sees paintings as living narratives - like TV series, films, or beloved books - each telling a unique story. However, these stories often remain hidden to our modern eyes. She loves to bridge the gap between us and the artwork, decoding signs and symbols to make these painted stories accessible to contemporary viewers. Join Liliya in discovering the endless wonder and joy that art brings, and let's unlock the stories behind each masterpiece together.
Our talk will focus entirely on one painting - William Hogarth’s “Graham’s Children.” Why choose Hogarth over the renowned Rubens, Rembrandt, or Velázquez? It's not easily explained in a single sentence. Among the more than 2,300 exhibits in the National Gallery of London, "Graham's Children" consistently attracts spontaneous and delightful activity. Visitors mimic, smile, and gather around it daily. People enjoy revisiting it as if they were visiting beloved relatives and friends.
Why does this painting have such an effect? That's precisely what we'll explore.
