UNESCO World Heritage

Do you know there are 19 World Heritage sites in Portugal? How does UNESCO make the choices? What criteria do they use? What makes the Portuguese Sites considered places of Outstanding Universal Value? We will answer these questions by looking at the selection process for designation of both Cultural Heritage and Natural Heritage Sites and we will also look at the positive and negative consequences of being chosen.

Heather Shiell and her family lived in Portugal from 2000 until returning to Ireland in 2010. She went back to study in University College Dublin as a mature student, alongside her children and after completing a degree in History and Geography, went on to complete a masters in World Heritage Management and Conservation in 2019. Heather now returns to Portugal regularly with her husband, and has found her way back to the IWP, especially enjoying the Sintra walks.
