Innovations for Healthy Aging in Place for Women over 50
by Lisa Handwerker
This presentation will discuss ideas related to "Aging in Place", using a Medical Anthropology focus. Older adults, especially women, seek independence, autonomy, flexibility, engagement, fulfilment and community in their pursuit of the highest quality of life. These values are at the heart of healthy and active "aging in place'. For inspiration, Lisa examines a Northern California membership based non-profit organization for older adults united by the members' desire to be healthy and active while remaining in their homes for as long as possible. Relying on both her volunteer and paid work. Lisa discusses the use of volunteer peer-to-peer support, community building and advanced technologies toward the goal of aging in place for women over 50.
While the talk focuses on an example in Northern California, during the post-talk we will explore possible ways this community model may be applicable to Portugal - including the feasibility of starting a similar volunteer organization.
