Interesting Avenidas Novas History Tidbits....

Presenter: Curt Nelson

What is the history of the neighbourhood where I live, Saldahna and Avenidas Novas? What is that building that looks like a castle in the Gulbenkian park? Who was Luis Bivar? Did you know that Av Duque de Ávila was originally the Lisbon “Ring Road”? What are those plaques on beautiful buildings for the "Prémio Valmor", and are they related somehow to the street Av Viscount de Valmor or the Valmor Palace on Av Republica? Who was São Sebastião, why is he always depicted full of arrows, and why is his church called “...da Pedreira”, “of the quarry”. What quarry?

Bio for Curt Nelson

Curt Nelson and his wife, IWP member Annette Seppanen, came to Lisbon part-time in 2018 after careers in San Diego & Austin Texas.  Originally Minnesotans, they graduated from the University of Minnesota and did graduate degrees at the University of Arizona in Tucson. After a decade at Hewlett-Packard, Curt became an entrepreneur in the software, real estate, and healthy food spaces. Now he tries to stay upright on the calcadas, hangs out with the Lisbon Area Gentlemen’s Society (LAGS), and fishes for walleye during their summers on a lake in Northern Minnesota
