From the 16th century, the Tagus estuary was fortified to defend Lisbon, with Oeiras as a strategic stronghold. The Fort of São Julião da Barra and nearby defenses still reflect this importance.
But Oeiras’s history is not only military. For centuries, ships from around the world passed through its waters, making the waterfront a hub of trade, society, and culture. By the 18th century, it also became a place of leisure.
This walk explores the evolving role of the Oeiras coastline—from defence to commerce to recreation—between the Fort of São Julião da Barra and Praia de Santo Amaro.
