THE WEAVER´S APPRENTICE

IWP member Bela Fabian will be speaking about her experience as an anthropologist living and working in the Amazon jungle. Here is her quick description:

“Marry me,” he said, and six weeks later we began our honeymoon by living with an indigenous tribe just south of the Brazilian Amazon. Six weeks more found me apprenticed to an elderly weaver, inadvertently igniting both gender contention and a cultural revival of weaving skills. What I learned about the Bororo people and about myself - while struggling to adapt and not get myself killed - changed me forever. Come

and hear my story of grit and perseverance. And a lot of dumb luck.”

IWP member Bela Fabian is a former hippie who spent most of the 70’s hitchhiking around the world, trying to figure out who she was. She spent most of the 80’s as an anthropologist, trying to figure out who others were. The 90’s were spent trying to figure out who her children were, or at least what to do about them. In the 00’s she tried again to figure out who she was, and in the 10’s she was shocked to realize that she’d gotten older and still didn’t have answers to any of these questions. Now it’s the 20’s and she’s still seeking answers, and writing about her journey. Bela is an American living in Lisbon with her husband Steve, who after 40 years, still shakes his head and smiles at her in wonder.
