In the aftermath of the devastating 1755 earthquake and tsunami, the reconstruction of Lisbon was guided by a single principle: no irregularities, no excesses. For the Marquis of Pombal, the powerful and reformist Prime Minister, the disaster presented not only a challenge but an opportunity—a chance to reshape the capital as a reflection of his enlightenment ideals and rationalist vision. From this, the Baixa Pombalina was born: a city centre rebuilt with order, symmetry, and resilience at its core.
