A district of narrow streets and deep-rooted traditions, Mouraria has long played a defining role in the history of Lisbon. Established as a Moorish enclave following the Christian reconquest of the city, it became a place where ancient cultures and knowledge converged. Artisans and legends found a home here; sciences and superstitions coexisted, even as the surrounding world was reshaped by earthquakes and urban expansion.
Mouraria is the birthplace of Lisbon’s fado and of iconic figures whose influence endures through time. Today, it stands as a vibrant, multicultural district —rich in voices, languages, and rediscovered traces of the past—each contributing to the unfolding story of this singular part of the city.
