Located in Lisbon’s Belém district, the National Coach Museum (Museu Nacional dos Coches) houses one of the world’s most important collections of historical carriages.
The museum is divided between two buildings: the original Royal Riding School, built in the 18th century, and a striking modern pavilion opened in 2015, designed by Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha., in partnership with Portuguese architect Ricardo Bak Gordon.
The collection spans from the 16th to the 19th centuries and includes ceremonial coaches, berlins, sedan chairs, and state carriages used by Portuguese and European royalty. Highlights include the richly decorated coaches sent to the Pope by King João V in the early 1700s—spectacular examples of Baroque art and political diplomacy.
