One of the challenges of moving to a new city is finding the things you need and want. Shopping is organized differently in Europe and it can be frustrating! Sarah LOVES shops, and shopping. She has never met a store window she didn't want to look at or a shop she didn't want to go in. Join her on a virtual hunting and gathering expedition around Lisbon. She will plot out neighborhoods and shops for antiques, good second hand furniture, new furniture and design shops, vintage clothing, clothing boutiques, specialty food shops, and what she calls odds and ends.

Sara retired to Lisbon from Southern California in the US with her husband, David, after a 26-year career as a court stenographer, during which she traveled the US working on asbestos/mesothelioma litigation.

    A VISIT TO THE FRESS

    Friday, May 17th

    11:00 - 13:00

In 1953, the banker and collector Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva donated the 17th century Azurara Palace and part of his private collection to the Portuguese State.

The FRESS (the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation) was born with the purpose to protect and promote the Portuguese decorative arts and crafts. The Foundation  holds a museum (The Museum of Portuguese Decorative Arts) and a department/school teaching technical and scientific skills in the area of decorative arts, traditional crafts, conservation and restoration. They also offer workshops.

We will start with a guided tour of the permanent collection of the museum with it’s displays of antiques, art objects, silverware and paintings dating back to the 18th century. This will be followed by a guided tour through the Department of Conservation and Restoration of the Foundation. We will witness highly qualified restaurators taking care of precious furniture and art pieces, learning more about furniture restoration.

    SETÚBAL, A CHARMING VILLAGE

    Tuesday, May 21th

    11:00 - 16:00

Setúbal, charming village between the Atlantic and the wild mountains

The small coastal town of Setúbal is known for its fish, its wines and its wild and protected mountains. Ideally located on the Sado River estuary, Setúbal has a history and industry closely linked to the sea.

It´s port, one of the main ports in the country since the 19th century, supplies octopus, seafood and other fresh fish to a covered market, which is considered the second best fish market in the world.

We will start our guided tour by visiting the market and the Labour Museum (Museu do Trabalho), housed in an old canning factory, to discover Setúbal´s industrial heritage linked to its fishing industry. Afterwards there will be free time for lunch (don’t forget to order the cuttlefish Setubal is famous for!) .

The tour will resume around around 14:30.

We will visit the Convent of Jesus with its church, which was built in the 15th century and is actually the 1st building in Portugal constructed in Manueline style. We will also make a stop at the Miradouro de São Sebastião with its beautiful views of the estuary do Sado and the Tróia peninsula.

We will then follow our guide strolling through the historic center between the central Praça do Bocage, (the  shopping and pedestrian part of the town ) and the  port with its small artisanal fishing boats. There will also be a stop at beautiful Casa da Baía and we will finish our tour at our meeting point, close to the Railway Station.

    How to get to Setúbal?

You can reach Setúbal easily by bus or train.  The journey should take around an hour, depending from where in Lisbon you are leaving. We are also organizing carpooling with shared costs. If you want to offer your car or like to have a ride, please contact Martina on designatemember.iwp@gmail.com

The neighbourhood houses houses three convents in a small area which have since become public buildings and museums (the Convento das Bernardas which houses the Marionette Museum).
