Member Highlight November 2022

This month we meet Leah Price
(by Joy Davenport)

Leah was born and grew up in Brisbane, Australia. At the age of 19 she took a break from college to work on a large cattle station/ranch as a nanny for two children. She also helped run the household which was 70 km from the nearest small town. Leah says she loved it and has many fond memories of her experience on the cattle ranch.

When she was 27 she decided to leave Australia and do some traveling with her best friend and her niece. Just before she left on her grand travel adventure, she met her future husband, a U.S. Army soldier who was stationed in Hawaii, but happened to be in Australia on a temporary military assignment.

Leah and her companions travelled primarily around the continental U.S. and Hawaii. She kept in touch with her boyfriend and at the end of her travels landed in Hawaii for the rest of the year. They married and later moved to Oklahoma where Leah would make her home for the next 30 years.

In her professional life, she was the administrator of a public, state-owned psychiatric hospital for many years. She’s very satisfied with her chosen profession, and feels it was her calling as much as her job. She retired from the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health after 29 years of service in March of 2022 and moved to Portugal in April. Leah knew that when she retired she wanted to be someplace warm and by an ocean.

She had been to Cascais a couple of times while still living in Oklahoma, on vacation with a work colleague / friend and already knew that Cascais met the requirements for a retirement location. Another reason for choosing Portugal is the easy access to other travel destinations on her list, primarily in Europe, many of which she plans to visit. Leah even has a tattoo that reads “Wanderer.”

She’s delighted to be a member of the IWP and feels privileged to meet such a diverse group of women; she also participates in many of the activities that are offered. She enjoys the walks and encourages (especially) anyone new to Portugal to join in the activities to meet amazing women and make friends. She enjoys physical activity and is a history buff who loves working jigsaw puzzles.

Leah currently volunteers with Riding for the Disabled and is enrolled in government sponsored Portuguese classes at a local school. She has one daughter, 27 who still lives in Oklahoma; her other family is in Australia.
