This month we are talking with Cecile Verney
(by Joy Davenport)

Cecile was born on the Ivory Coast of Africa. When she was 12 years old she moved to France with her mother, who was an English teacher. Although named after patron saint of music, Cecilia, it wasn’t until early adulthood that Cecile found her passion for music.

One day at home, she was singing while washing dishes and a friend noted her amazing voice and told her she should audition at a local club; she did, and was offered a job singing. She originally was drawn to pop, reggae, and soul music before deciding that jazz was her primary genre for music. It was during this time Cecile realized her heart was in music, and she left her studies of law and chose singing as her life work. Along with the music from some jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, she also began writing her own songs.

Cecile moved to Portugal with her (retired) German husband in November 2020.She has a grown son and daughter, and currently lives in Areia (Cascais) area. She continues her music career with her ensemble “Cecile Verny Quartet” performing primarily in Germany, but has also performed at Avenew in Lisbon. She looks forward to expanding her career in Portugal. Although French is Cecile’s native language, she also speaks German and English, and is currently learning Portuguese.

She enjoys movies, cooking, and has a garden where she grows herbs and veggies. When she has the time, she also enjoys yoga and sewing. She joined IWP for the camaraderie and hopes to continue to meet woman of all nationalities and backgrounds.
