Welcome to the IWP Newsletter
Dear International Women in Portugal (IWP) members,
We hope you are all well and healthy and enjoying the change from Summer to Autumn. The weather is definitely cooler and the wind in recent days has changed the colours and the levels of the ocean, but compared to other parts of the world, we are still enjoying very mild temperatures.
At this time of the year, traditionally in IWP we have our Open Day, a big annual event when registered members and newcomers get to know our organization, renew or initiate their membership, and register for activities which are organized for IWP members.
Unfortunately, this year the big gathering of International Women in one location is neither permitted nor advisable, so the IWP Executive Board had to rethink the Open Day format. In place of the traditional one-day large event, we will set up a table or booth in the Mercado de Cascais on Sundays during the month of October. We would love you to come by and say hello. We want to see you, show you what activities are STILL going on (within the current limitations) and help you renew your membership if it is up for renewal.
We will also take this opportunity to promote and show Sunday marketgoers what the International Women in Portugal (IWP) is about and encourage other women expats to become members.
Naturally, we will abide the safety rules of the Mercado, which include the use of a mask at all times, social distancing and washing your hands at the entrance.
The Mercado de Cascais will also be the new location for the weekly coffee mornings in Cascais as well as a Fall Flower Arrangement event which we organized for you in October.
And for those ladies who were so disappointed by being unable to join the first two “Summer Architecture Tours,” Marsha Turner is leading another one next week.
We are also proud to announce that among the many amazing women in IWP we have two (please let me know if there are more!) published writers who would like to meet you and share their experiences. They will be attending coffee mornings to make this possible.
Please check the IWP website events calendar (which is beautiful by the way!) for more details.
We hope the change in the weather won’t cool your spirits and enthusiasm, and that when we see each other… in town, along the Paredao, or at the market… you will feel, like me, that being part of this amazing group of women is a major factor in your happiness and mental sanity in these crazy times.
Best Autumnal wishes,
Maria Barros and the Executive Board

Buen Camino! Like many of you, I have wanted to walk the “Camino” for some time. In fact, I had everything booked and ready to go last May, but then Covid happened and our trip was postponed to next year. During a recent outing of the Sintra Walks however…

Who are Emilie & Louise? They are two master students from Denmark who are studying Educational Anthropology at DPU, University of Aarhus in Copenhagen, searching for a potential field of study for their final thesis.
As a part of their master’s degree, they are doing a three month long fieldwork abroad from mid-August to mid-November to collect material and gain knowledge for their final thesis. If you see Emilie and Louise joining and participating in IWP organized activities, please don’t be shy and introduce yourself!
New Rules about Masks
Very soon the Direção-Geral de Saúde (DGS) will publish a guideline that will recommend the use of a mask outside in busy places or whenever it is not possible to guarantee physical distancing.
With a growing pandemic, the proximity of a critical phase and the challenges posed in avoiding gatherings, especially of young people, the Health Authorities are trying to minimize contagion.
However, the Doctors’ Association, which has been recommending wearing a mask since August, says it is necessary to go further and make its use mandatory.
“Very soon, and after consulting with national and international experts, there will be a guideline in the sense that when people are unable to guarantee the recommended physical distance of 2 meters, even outdoors, they should wear masks,” say the authorities.
- We are always looking for members to help our IWP Executive Board run this wonderful organisation. If you would like to get involved, please click here to contact us.
- Please note that in keeping with the objectives of the Association, the promotion of a business or the sale of goods or services is not allowed.
| We also have a closed Facebook group (IWP Members Forum) for members to share ideas and fun photos of the activities they do together. Now you are a member, we will add you to the group. We look forward to seeing you there! |
